Third Annual NCIBI Research Meeting
The National Center for Integrative Biomedical Informatics held its Third Annual Research Conference on April 29 and 30, 2008 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The meeting was attended in person by 80 participants, including members of our scientific advisory board and science and program officers from NIH. Our use of interactive remote transmission of the live presentations of slides, talks and audio was a successful addition this year and was appreciated by 20 participants who were not able to attend the meeting in person.
On the first day, demonstrations of the integration and applications of the NCIBI suite of tools provided a backbone for presentations of the accomplishments this year of our four Driving Biological Projects (DBPs) We had 36 posters on tool development and applications. Our keynote address titled, "Information-Integration-Based Approaches for Discovery in Biomedical Research" was given by Dr. John Quackenbush from Harvard School of Public Health and Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
On the second day we presented our evaluation of the usability of tools, outreach and dissemination progress with our "Tools and Technologies seminars", and collaborative work on 'bioinformationists' with the Health Sciences Library. Then we presented and discussed plans for newly-structured DBPs on Diabetes and Metabolic Pathways; Molecular Pathophysiology of Cancers; and Bipolar Spectrum Disorders and Comorbidities, including Additive Behaviors. The slides and posters are available. Finally, we discussed the collaborative projects and publications across the seven National Centers for Biomedical Computing, the national influence of the NCIBI in relation to Clinical and Translational Science Award institutions, the prospects for a summer institute in Ann Arbor in 2009 on Translational Biomedical Informatics, and the preparations for the NCBC All-Hands Meeting 13-14 August 2008 in Bethesda. If you have any questions or comments, please email cavalcol@umich.edu. We look forward to an exciting summer and year to come.
